The Classic Trooper is our reimagined and refined version of Mr. Larry Heskett’s Tarpin Hills trooper saddle. Many years ago I was fortunate enough to purchase Mr. Larry’s leather cutting dies from his family after his passing. I’ve always been very proud to have been able to obtain the set especially considering the impact that Tarpin Hills had in the field trial world and me personally. When I was in my late teens I found myself a college drop out and back working in my fathers saddle repair shop. I was attending the Free For All in Union Springs, Alabama when a chance conversation with Mr. Larry turned from mentioning that I worked in my dad’s shop to a meandering hour long talk about building saddles and the saddle business in general. I kept nuggets of wisdom from that conversation that are still pertinent to me today. So when I got the chance to own a part of what he was able to build I jumped at it. I kept the dies for several years before I finally decided to put them to work. My goal was to honor what he had built as well as to add to it a my own perspective and the techniques that I had picked up along my own journey. Here is a little breakdown of what I added.
Improvements include a narrowed seat to ease the transition between the seat and flaps. We use a two layer combination of gel and upholstery foams to improve the seat padding. We beefed up the rigging by adding doubled-and-stitched O ring rigging replacing the single ply and riveted rigging of the original. All hardware on our version is stainless steel, which we find to be superior to brass in strength but also does not tarnish and blue. We also have a few options for fender and stirrup configuration.
NOTE: This saddle, like all of our saddles, is custom-made to fit your needs and specifications. Because of this, we take about 4-6 weeks to handcraft each saddle. If you’d like more information about our custom made saddles or have a specific request, please message us at [email protected] and we’ll fill you in. Make sure to check out our other one of a kind products in The Shop. Thanks!
