To make our 5/8″ flat split reins so buttery we start by cutting strips of fine English bridle leather from the firmest and cleanest part of the hide, the backbone.  We round the four corners of each rein strip to give them a comfortable in the hands.  We apply edge paint and hand burnish the edges for a glass like smoothness.  We add  heavy solid brass or stainless steel swivel eye bolt snaps to securely and easily attach the reins to the bit.  To fasten the snaps to the reins we use tied slobber straps that are secure but will break away incase of an emergency.  Lastly, we add redundant slide loops to our 5/8″ flat split reins to keep them in place and from getting out of hand in a tight spot.
